Minister Clare speaks to the AFR Higher Education Summit

On Tuesday 19 August, Education Minister, the Hon. Jason Clare MP, spoke to the Australian Financial Review Higher Education Summit. The Ministers’ speech highlighted the key areas of work the government has undertaken and committed to in the Higher Education sector, and we were pleased to hear the Minister refer to the strong work being undertaken within the sector to build trust and improve governance — such as the UCC’s recent public statement on Vice-Chancellor remuneration.

The Minister’s comments that the current work with the Expert Council on University Governance, Chaired by Melinda Cilento (CEO, CEDA), is “not about belting universities” but about “working together to make our universities better” was a welcome comment. The UCC looks forward to continuing to work proactively with the Minister, the Department, and the Expert Council to continue to support our sector more widely.

Further comments around a review of TEQSA to ensure it is equipped with the tools it needs to undertake its role as the regulator of our sector are welcomed, and we note the Universities Australia media release on the TEQSA review here

The full speech can be found on the Minister Media Centre site here.
